Intercultural Capital - Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008

Youth Invasion in Liverpool - Portrait of a Nation and its European Dimension

Portrait of A Nation is a project exploring British identity in a 21st century context. 18 UK cities created and developed projects within community and youth projects on this particular topic and displayed their work throughout the year.

In December about 300 representatives shared their experience and outcomes with the other cities in Liverpool.

Previous to this amazing intercultural get-together, we initiated a European dimension to the youth project. We invited 2 of Liverpool's partner cities/regions to take part in an intercultural workshop on European identity. Artistic facilitator Jay Yung led on the discussion and enabled the participants to express themselves.

The aim was to use art to exchange ideas and explore interculturalism and reflect this on a board game.

Discussion topics:

  • Does a school uniform suppress my identity?
  • Icons and fashion, what do they mean?
  • How important are family and friends to me?
  • How do they influence our identity?
  • Your vision of yourself in 5 years

One of the tasks was to bring something that represents your country:

Two of the British participants brought potatoes, Linz participants brought a Linz cake, and the German participant contributed a watch.
